Meat and Poultry

Demand for meat and related products is increasing, especially in developing markets, as consumers become better off. In particular poultry continues to be a key animal protein in many developing markets on account of its affordability and it general acceptability to most cultures, as it is often a traditional product. However there is also growing demand for other meats such as beef and pork in many emerging markets. Meanwhile in the more mature, mainly Western economies, consumers are giving greater scrutiny than ever to what they buy – and are often becoming more and more open to alternative protein sources and a flexitarian approach to their diets. Issues of sustainability and climate change are coming rapidly to the fore in this sector of course.

Meat production is, moreover, a key driver of global trade in feed inputs such as grain products and whey protein by-products.  It is currently undergoing what appears to be a profound change as a result of ASF’s impact on the Chinese pig industry in particular.
